4. Weddings

4.1 - How far in advance do I need to book a reception venue?

The demand for venues grows stronger every year, so we recommend booking your venue 12-24 months in advance.

4.2 - When should I organise transport?

You need to book transport 12-24 months in advance, especially if your bridal party is large and in need of a 10-seater car.

4.3 - When do I need to book the church/garden/registrar?

It pays to organise these venues well in advance. We recommend booking your preferred venue 12-18 months in advance.

4.4 - How far in advance do I need to organise a photographer/ videographer?

Every couple needs their special day captured on film, and no one likes to miss out on having the photographer or videographer of choice. We therefore suggest you make your booking at least 12-18 months before your wedding.

4.5 - When should I start looking for a bridal gown?

It is important to allow plenty of time to find the perfect gown. It can take 9-12 months to select or make a gown, and numerous fittings may be required.

4.6 - When do I need to book a makeup artist and/or hair stylist?

To get the best price, the right look and to find someone with whom you are comfortable, you need to start looking for these professionals 9-12 months before the big day.

4.7 - How long does it take to organise bridal party dresses and suits?

Allow 3-4 months to purchase a ready-made gown or around 6 months if you are having your bridesmaids’ dresses tailor made. Suits can be hired or purchased from a large number of outlets, so finding the right menswear should not take as long.

4.8 - When should I start looking for accessories?

You might like to wait until your wedding gown has been chosen before selecting your accessories. We can recommend great accessory retailers to help you to find the perfect look. We suggest allowing 3-4 months to find the right accessories.

4.9 - How far in advance do I need to order flowers?

Florists like to source the most perfect blooms for your bouquets, corsages and table arrangements, so bookings should be made 3-4 months before your wedding day. In some cases, orders are shipped from interstate or overseas, which can take extra time.

4.10 - When should I order the cake?

We suggest you order your cake 2-3 months before your wedding day. Traditional fruit cakes need to soak in alcohol for 4-6, which preserves the cake so that part of it can be saved until the couple’s first anniversary or the birth of their first child. It takes less time to make non-traditional cakes such as chocolate or butter cake.

4.11 - When is the best time to send out invitations?

It all depends when your big day is, but 8-12 weeks is usually enough time to send the invites and customise your stationery for the tables. Don’t leave it too late as many of your guests will have things planned in advance. You may need to allow more time if your wedding is at the start of the year, as your invitations can be caught up in the annual Christmas card rush. So send early to make sure your invite gets to its proposed destination in time.

4.12 - What kind of wedding cake can I have?

Fruit cake has traditionally been used for wedding cakes, but many other delicious wedding cakes are also available. Many couples now opt for yummy chocolate mud cake, butter cake, carrot cake, or even cupcakes. Cupcakes also save you money as you don’t get charged for the cake serving or cutting. Now there’s an idea!

4.13 - Can you help me to find the right look for my hair and makeup?

Will you wear your hair up or down, curly or styled, with a hat or veil, with a headpiece or tiara or maybe you would prefer a unique style with spikes, loops or jewels encrusted in your hair? What makeup colours suit your colouring, and which colours are in this season? We can put you in touch with great hair stylists and make up artists to discuss your choices and help you to make these important decisions.

4.14 - Where should I look for bridesmaids’ dresses?

Bridesmaids’ dresses can be found at eveningwear retailers, bridal shops and high quality department stores. It really pays to shop around, as you might find the ideal gown at a much cheaper price in a different store. Don’t forget to check out the sales – you never know when you might find a bargain!
